Coffee: An Aromatic Journey
Coffee is a drink that intertwines with the culture, history and passion of millions across the globe, transcending the mere act of drinking. In Portugal, coffee is more than an ordinary drink; it is a daily ritual, an experience shared between friends and an indelible part of Portuguese culture.
The history of coffee dates back to the ancient highlands of Ethiopia, where, according to legend, a shepherd observed his goats full of energy after eating the fruits of an unknown bush. Thus was born the discovery of coffee. From Africa, the coffee plant, Coffea, traveled along trade routes to the Middle East, where it was first cultivated in the Yemen region. From there, its popularity spread throughout the Arabian Peninsula, later reaching Europe and America.
Currently, coffee is grown in tropical regions around the world, known as the "Coffee Belt." Countries such as Brazil, Colombia, Ethiopia and Vietnam lead the production of green coffee. There are two main varieties of coffee plants: Arabica and Robusta. Arabica, with its smoothness and fruity notes, grows at higher altitudes, while Robusta, more resistant and with a stronger flavor, thrives in lower altitude regions.
Coffee production is a complex and involved process. Farmers harvest the ripe fruits, known as coffee cherries, which are then processed and dried before roasting. This last step is crucial, as it transforms the green beans into the aromatic, brown coffee beans we know. Temperature and time are meticulously adjusted to bring out the unique characteristics of each variety, creating a range of flavor profiles that range from light and fruity to dark and robust.
In short, coffee is much more than just a drink; it is a sensorial journey that crosses continents, cultures and generations. Its rich history, its fascinating varieties and the diversity of rituals that surround it make it a link that unites people from all over the world. So, the next time you enjoy a cup of coffee, allow yourself to be transported by this aromatic journey that unites past and present, culture and passion.
